Speaking with Our Children about the Violent Storming of the U.S. Capitol Building The violence displayed at the U.S. Capitol Building on Wednesday, January 6, was shocking to me and affected me a great deal. As Dr. Doyle and our VUSD School Board have communicated in the most recent Community Update (01/07/21), I also condemn the actions of the protesters who stormed the U.S. Capitol Building. The values of our country were challenged. As educators, we are charged with educating all of our students in the structure of our government agencies, laws, and policies. At Alamosa Park, we value respect, trust, collaboration, equity, gratitude, kindness, and empathy. As principal of Alamosa Park, I remain steadfast in continuing to work with all of our students, staff, and families to hold these values close to our heart. Please remain together and with me, as the Alamosa Park team continues to provide high quality teaching, learning, and great support for all of our students, families and community. While families may continue to process these disturbing events, our students may also be trying to make sense of what they are seeing and hearing. In her article, "Talking to Kids about Violence at the U.S. Capitol" (Updated 01/07/21), Diane Jones Lowrey provides age-based tips to have conversations as a family about disturbing events. Please click HERE for this article as well as other resources at the end of the article that help students understand the news. As always, should your child need any emotional support, please contact me (kyleruggles@vistausd.org or 760-940-0700 x49001), our School Counselor Mrs. Coccodrilli (loricoccodrilli@vistausd.org), or your child’s teacher.
