The purpose of this email is to communicate the following:
  • Dual Language Immersion (DLI) interest list starting for the 2021-22 school year for Grades K, 1, and 2
  • Winter Breakfast and Lunch Menu for the WaveCrest Café at Alamosa Park
  • Virtual student pictures are available for pick up in the cage area

Dual Language Immersion (DLI) -- Interest list starting for the 2021-22 school year for Grades K, 1, and 2

The Alamosa Park DLI program provides an excellent opportunity for students to become completely bilingual in Spanish and English while being on track to receive the California State Seal of Biliteracy upon High School graduation. Our 90/10 DLI model provides a DLI learning pathway for students to learn Spanish with 90% of the instruction in Spanish (10% in English) starting in Grades K and 1 and reducing to 80% of instruction in Spanish in Grade 2. If you will have a student in Grades K, 1, or 2 for the 2021-22 school year, and are interested in learning more about our fantastic DLI Program and being added to the Alamosa Park DLI Interest List for 2021-22 school year, please contact Principal Ruggles at kyleruggles@vistausd.org or 760-940-0700 x49001.

Speaking with Our Children about the Violent Storming of the U.S. Capitol Building

The violence displayed at the U.S. Capitol Building on Wednesday, January 6, was shocking to me and affected me a great deal. As Dr. Doyle and our VUSD School Board have communicated in the most recent Community Update (01/07/21), I also condemn the actions of the protesters who stormed the U.S. Capitol Building. The values of our country were challenged. As educators, we are charged with educating all of our students in the structure of our government agencies, laws, and policies. At Alamosa Park, we value respect, trust, collaboration, equity, gratitude, kindness, and empathy. As principal of Alamosa Park, I remain steadfast in continuing to work with all of our students, staff, and families to hold these values close to our heart. Please remain together and with me, as the Alamosa Park team continues to provide high quality teaching, learning, and great support for all of our students, families and community.
While families may continue to process these disturbing events, our students may also be trying to make sense of what they are seeing and hearing. In her article, "Talking to Kids about Violence at the U.S. Capitol" (Updated 01/07/21), Diane Jones Lowrey provides age-based tips to have conversations as a family about disturbing events. Please click HERE for this article as well as other resources at the end of the article that help students understand the news.
As always, should your child need any emotional support, please contact me (kyleruggles@vistausd.org or 760-940-0700 x49001), our School Counselor Mrs. Coccodrilli (loricoccodrilli@vistausd.org), or your child’s teacher.

Winter Break is 12/19/20 – 01/03/21 (School Resumes on Monday, January 4, 2021)
At the VUSD Board Meeting last night (Thursday, 12/17/20), our school board elected to have all students in VUSD elementary schools start on Monday, January 4, in virtual learning. After much discussion about how to address the community spread of the virus, our School Board took action to implement a one week pause on all in-person learning at the elementary schools after the winter break and pivot to virtual learning. All elementary schools will reconvene for Vista Classic in-person instruction on January 11, 2021. All district supplemental programs (including Dual Language Immersion) are included in this one week pause and will reconvene, in-person, on January 11, 2021. As a result, all Alamosa Park students will be learning from home, virtually during the week of Monday, January 4. On Monday, January 11, Classic students will return to in-person learning at Alamosa Park, and Vista Virtual students will continue learning virtually. Your child’s teacher will be in touch with you about guidance for student work when we return in 2021!!

I wish everyone a fabulous winter break, a great Holiday Season, and Happy New Year!

Health & Safety Communication from Principal Ruggles

I would like to take a moment to describe my communication to our community regarding Health & Safety as it related to COVID-19. There are typically three different reasons that you would be notified of situations relating to COVID-19 health and safety.
  1. Symptoms: Should your child have any symptoms that are typically associated with COVID-19 symptoms, you will be contacted by Alamosa Park school nurse or office staff with next steps for your child, which is typically either a 10-calendar day quarantine, or a negative PCR COVID test and 72 hours of no symptoms. Your child’s teacher will provide your child with classwork during the time they miss school.
  2. Close Contact or “Exposed to Exposed”: If your child or your child’s class has been in close contact with another individual who was reported to our office as someone who was recently a close contact to an individual who has recently tested positive for COVID-19, I will notify your child’s class that it is possible that your child may have had close contact with someone who is a close contact of an individual who tested positive. In this case, there is no need for the class to quarantine.
  3. Positive COVID-19 Case: If your child has been in close contact (within 6 feet or closer for a time period of 15 or more minutes) with someone who has recently tested positive for COVID-19, every student in the class of the student or staff member who tested positive for COVID-19 will be contacted by me and will be placed into a 14-calendar day quarantine. Either your child’s teacher will pivot to virtual learning or your child’s teacher will provide your child with classwork during the time they miss school.
I refer to the Decision Guide for COVID-19 Symptoms & Exposures (San Diego County office of Education)  in order to determine next steps in each health and safety situation for our students and staff. All of the Health and Safety information, including our Alamosa Park COVID-19 Prevention Plan is located on the top of the Alamosa Park web page (please click HERE).

Learning Model Registration information:

You may have recently submitted to me your request for a learning model change for January 2021. At this time, I do not have any final details or information to share with families about any learning model changes for January 2021. As I receive any information regarding learning model consideration and potential changes, I will communicate this to the families who have submitted a request to change their learning model for January 2021. Thank you for your patience.
